Dr Sandra Marques Nascimento Fonseca is a female specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist practising at Life Bedford Gardens Hospital in Bedfordview.
She was born and raised in Johannesburg, Gauteng with her 2 younger brothers. Tragically her mother died of cervical cancer when she was 14 years old. This would later be one of the main reasons she was inspired to pursue a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
After matriculating from Assumption Convent Malvern she obtained a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and worked as a full-time retail pharmacist for 7 years.
She then return to her alma mater to complete a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree in 2008. Following this she did her 2 years of medical internship and 1 year of community service at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. During this time she realized she was passionate about bringing new lives into the world and medical and surgical interventions that either prevented or cured potentially fatal female pathological conditions intrigued her.
She therefore trained and gained wide experience as a specialist in her field of interest at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child, Klerksdorp, Sebokeng and Edenvale Hospitals. She was admiitted as a Fellow of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa in 2016.
She worked as a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist training medical students, interns and registrars at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Academic Hospital for a year before deciding to move from the government sector to private practice.
She joined Gynomed a group practice of specialist Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2017. The group is committed to providing 24 hour cover for all their patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The group comprises of two branches one at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital and the other at Life Bedford Gardens Hospital. Fertilite is the group’s affiliated fertility clinic which provides IVF facilities at the Life Wilgeheuwel Practice rooms.
Dr Fonseca is enthusiastic and passionate. She practices evidence based medicine and encourages a multi-disciplinary team approach, wanting the very best outcomes and patient-centered care for all her patients. She is currently completing her Masters in Medicine degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology also through the University of the Witwatersrand.
Dr Fonseca lives in Edenglen and enjoys gardening, reading, step aerobics and spending time with her family.
